So I understand the concept that if you have 5>4>3|1<1<1 for ranges, your whole army can attack every aspect of theirs, but only their vanguard can attack yours.  But what does that mean?  That their Center and Rear will just sit there waiting to die (within 8 rounds)?  Does this mean that you could effectively beat a level 5 land with say, 4K soldiers, with the right composition?  Let's, for the sake of simplicity, also assume the enemy heroes can't use long range spells.

Its possible.But just check out that,If your army is 4000,Each turn your attack damage will less than army with10000;I suggest you  have a try during game time.:)

Yeah but, if the enemy's total army is 10K (3333 each let's say), wouldn't you get 4k>3.3k.  What I'm asking is, how does the range mechanic work, and in the above case, would the enemy center/backline just sit there and do nothing while getting lambasted by arrows/etc?  I guess if the disparity is just too big it'd end in a draw.

Is it just an initial condition (i.e. if the rear+center attack the enemy vanguard, vanguard attacks enemy center); then the subsequent round the new arrangement is _>_>_|(5+4)1<(3)1<1 whereby all three enemy Gairo can attack your army?  I would assume deciding which army moves where is based on some sense of priority.  Or, alternatively, is it some kind of static condition?

Edit: So I ran a test battle (it seems thieves/barbarians always spawn in 1<1<1 formats), with this arrangement for the battle 3>2>_|1<1<1 and basically both of my cavalry attacked the vanguard, then the center, then the rear.  During which, each of the enemy armies just waited to be attacked.

If I am not mistaken, and to my knowledge from reading about the "attack range" is:
(rear)1-(center)2-(front)3     -    1(front)-2(center)-3(rear)      <Formation>
Attack range from 1:1 is 3.
Attack range from 1:3 is 5.
Attack range from 2:1 is 2.
Attack range from 2:3 is 4.
Attack range from 3:1 is 1.
Attack range from 3:3 is 3.

It is recommended to have a rear range of >=3, center >=2, front >=1.
Ex: When the attack range of the rear is 3, the target is the enemy front. When the attack range of the rear is 4, the target is the enemy center or front and the probability is decided randomly. When the attack range of the rear is 5, the target could be any part of the enemy team.

Attack range and skill range are two separate settings, and don't affect each other.
